Vintage Stanley Yankee No.135A Spiral Screwdriver - Made in Sheffield, England
£35.00
Stanley "YANKEE" No.135A spiral ratchet screwdriver
by Stanley Works Ltd, Sheffield, England
Dated to approx. 1950-70
A quality Stanley ‘Yankee’ No.135A spiral ratchet screwdriver clearly marked “Made by Stanley Works Ltd Sheffield, England” - a classic push-action driver with wooden handle.
This iconic push-action screwdriver features the ingenious spiral ratchet mechanism that converts downward pressure into rotary motion, making it ideal for rapid screw driving. The chrome-plated body houses the precision-engineered mechanism, whilst the attractive turned wooden handle (with characterful red painted finish) provides comfortable grip. Complete with a driver bit. The knurled brass collar allows adjustment between drive, ratchet, and locked positions.
The ‘Yankee’ name became synonymous with spiral ratchet screwdrivers, though this Sheffield-made example represents British manufacture of these American-designed tools under license. Stanley Works established production in Sheffield to serve the UK and Commonwealth markets. Sheffield’s reputation for quality steel and precision toolmaking made it an ideal location. These Sheffield-made Stanley tools are particularly collectible, combining American innovation with British manufacturing excellence.
Patented in April 1895, "YANKEE" soon became the name for the automatic spiral ratchet screwdriver. Over the next four decades, several improvements were made and patented by North Bros. with the 'A' referring to the improved way of securing the mechanism to the casing. Purchased by STANLEY in 1946. The No.135A was one of Stanley’s most popular spiral screwdriver models, offering the perfect balance of size, power, and versatility for general workshop use. The spiral mechanism dramatically increased driving speed compared to conventional screwdrivers, making it a favourite among carpenters, electricians, and mechanics.
Good vintage working condition. Chrome body shows honest wear with working patina. Wooden handle solid with attractive aged red finish showing character. Spiral mechanism operates smoothly. Ratchet adjustment functions properly. Complete with bit. A genuine working tool from Sheffield’s toolmaking heritage.
With a length, closed 8 1/4" (21cm), extended 11 1/2" (29cm), it's perfect for woodworkers, vintage tool collectors, Sheffield tool enthusiasts, or practical workshop use. A quality piece representing both Stanley’s innovative design and Sheffield’s manufacturing prowess.
