Vintage 7" infill style, smoothing or coffin plane.
Body unknown manufacturer, blade Sam Ashton, Sheffield. Chip Breaker: Thos. Ibbotson
Late 19th to early 20th Century

A rare and desirable vintage infill smoothing plane featuring premium components from two renowned Sheffield toolmakers. This exceptional hand plane showcases the pinnacle of traditional British toolmaking craftsmanship, with beautiful rosewood infills and steel construction.

The plane features gorgeous rosewood infills for both the front knob and rear tote, displaying rich grain and warm patina. The steel body construction is characteristic of infill planes, and the brass adjustment components remain functional.

Infill planes represent the height of hand plane evolution and were the most expensive, precision tools a craftsman could own. Unlike standard Bailey-pattern planes with wooden bases, infill planes featured steel or iron bodies “infilled” with dense hardwoods like rosewood. This construction provided superior weight, stability, and performance for the finest smoothing work.
Sheffield was the heart of British edge tool manufacturing, and both Sam Ashton and Thomas Ibbotson were respected makers operating during the golden age of hand tool production. Sam Ashton specialized in quality plane irons and cutting tools, while Ibbotson & Co. was established in the 1700s and became one of Sheffield’s premier edge tool manufacturers.

Infill planes were predominantly made by specialist makers rather than large manufacturers, often purchased by cabinetmakers, patternmakers, and joiners who demanded the absolute best performance for fine finishing work. The combination of components from two Sheffield makers in one plane speaks to the tradition of craftsmen assembling and customizing their tools with the finest available parts.

Very heavy in the hand at over 3lb 15oz (1.8Kg). Total legth 9" (32cm), heigth 5" (13cm) and width 2 5/8" (6.5cm).

Vintage with honest age-appropriate wear and working patina. Shows evidence of use by a skilled craftsman. Rosewood infills retain excellent structural integrity with beautiful color and grain. A wonderful example of British toolmaking heritage. The blade and iron have been left to be sharpened by the new owner.
