Usually called 'rabbit' planes in the workshop, they are used for making rebates or 'rabbits', working end grain, or making final jointing cuts on boards. The blade widths range from 1/4" to 1 3/4" and can be straight or skewed, at a 15° angle, which makes cutting easier, either with or across the grain. The Skew mouth lets shavings escape easily and prevent 'choking', plus helps pull the fence tight against the work.
Marked 'ONIONS & Co WARRANTED CAST STEEL' on the toe and 'WARRANTED BEST ENGLISH MAKER' on the heel. Also shows previous owners marks of 'NEWSUMS & Co' and 'D.GOLLAND'.
From 1888 to 1904 Onions & Co. made a wide range of tools in Birmingham. John Shaw & Sons, group incorporated the company in 1906 and probably continued to make tools under the brand, a typical proceedure at the time.
In good used condition, with no chips to blade edge. The sole does look like it has had to temporay fence screwed on at sometime in it's past.
Has been lightly cleaned and oiled with raw linseed oil, to keep the original patina.
Aged related wear.
