Part of our Heirloom Collection of individual Chess sets.
This luxurious, imposing, hand made, talking point chess set in The Reynard the Fox design makes a real statement. With hand painted accents the detail on this set really stands out and each side has a selection of the three different pawns making each set truly unique.
A very large set with the tallest figure, the king, standing at 7.75" (19.5cm) with a base of 1.75" (4.5cm), while the shortest, the pawn, stands at 4.5" (11.5cm) with a base of 1.5" (4cm). The whole set (all 32 pieces) weighs in at approx 5.5KG.
PLEASE NOTE: There is no board with this set. The chess set is shown on our 3 1/4" (80mm) board, in taupe and black, with the Square solid Oak edge. Our recommendation would be a 2.75" (70mm) squared board, the 2.25" (60mm) squared board would be the minimum size board square for this set.
The characters in this set are from Reynard the Fox, a series of medieval Dutch, English, French and German fables. The first versions date from the second half of the 12th century.
The stories are largely concerned with the main character Reynard, a red fox and trickster figure. His adventures usually involve him deceiving other animals for his own advantage or trying to avoid their retaliatory efforts.
The Reynard the Fox chess set is a reproduction of models created by Von Kaulbach to illustrate the 13th Century tale of Reyanrd the Fox, as translated into German by Goethe in 1867. The original pieces are now in the Historiches Stadt Museum, Munich.
Meet the characters:
King – King Noble the Lion
Queen – Tibert the Cat, Prince of cats
Bishop – Reynard the Fox
Knight – King Crampart’s Horse (possibly)
Rook – Bruin the Bear
Pawn – Martin the Ape/Bellin the Ram/Kyward the Hare
The set is cast in a hard and durable stone casting powder, giving each piece beautiful detail and definition. The hand colouring and finishing, using a method passed down through the family, ensures durablity and quality; futher enhancing the details. Each piece is completed with a felt base ensuring that your board does not become scratched.
Although this set is beautifully decorative, it is very durable and is intended to be used and enjoyed as much as displayed.
The colours for these pieces are aged ivory for the light, with red accents and dark oak, with blue accents for the dark.
Each piece will be individually wrapped and packed in a sturdy cardboard box ensuring the best protection possible. Wherever possible we will use recycled packing to reduce our environmental impact, so please don't be surprised if your chess set arrives in a pre-loved Amazon or cat food box!
